Focal Areas in HIM study include

  • Medical terminology and Anatomy- To understand clinical documentation
  • Health Data Management-Collecting. Analyzing, securing patient data.
  • Medical Coding and Classification-Learning systems like ICD10, CPT, HCPCS as well as ICD11 the most current version.
  • Legal aspects of Health Information-Understanding HIPAA and other regulations.
  • Health Informatics and Data Analytics-Using data to improve care and operations.
  • Quality Improvement and Compliance-Ensuring accurate, complete and legal documentation.

Therefore, graduates of Health Information Management from Bayelsa State College of Health Technology should be able to:

  • Independently
  • Organize, track, store, analyze and interpret Health data.
  • Provide reliable health data for reimbursement, policy making as well as in case of litigation.

Work-setting

Upon graduation, HIM professional can work in the following settings: Hospitals Clinics; Insurance companies; Government Health Departments; Electronic Health Records(EHR) venders, etc.
